NY Senior Hurling Final Match Report
Now that the dust has settled on the final piece of Senior Hurling action in New York for 2018 - we have time to dwell on what was a nail-biting encounter in Gaelic Park on Sunday.

The opening exchanges were strong and fair and both teams gave little away. TippNY opened the scoring through a Michael Sheedy free and a Tommy Kavanagh point - which was swiftly followed by a well-taken goal by Jack Guiney. The game began to open up and both teams created a lot of spaces but TippNY will rue a lot of missed chances from poor decision making and general lack of urgency. Hoboken continued to make steady progress and marksman Ross King continued the pressure on the TippNY back all days long. King flighted over points from frees and from play with ease. It was tit for tat throughout the first half but TippNY managed to sneak a late goal by the ever-industrious Tom Phelan with minutes to go in the first half, leaving the score at halftime TippNY 1.09 - Hoboken 1.08

In hindsight halftime came too soon for the boys in blue, their tails were up and an opportunity to increase their lead seems likely.

The second half started similar to the first no team overly dominating the game with each score been followed with another from the opposing side. For a short period in the second half TippNY found a foothold in the game - which Michael Sheedy, Bonner Maher, and Tom Phelan exciting the crowds, and with 50minutes on the clock TippNY led by 1.18 to 1.16 things looking good. But full credit to the Hoboken side led by Paul Loughnane, Paul Gordon, and Cathal Barrett - they harried, chased and fought their way back into the game taking the lead with seconds on the clock. TippNY needed a leader to stand up with just 25 seconds on the clock before the hooter would sound - TippNY scrambled for the ball and Mikey Sheedy prevailed and shot through the posts to bring the game to extra time.

Extra time in ways didn’t live up to the rip-roaring normal time thriller dished out to the crowd in attendance at Gaelic Park. But TippNY started the stronger with a goal within seconds of the restart by that man again Tom Phelan. But the most important play of the game came from the restart with Hoboken marching down the field to put the ball in the back of the net thanks
to Cathal Barrett, although the Tipp boys feeling hard done by when Bryan Power was fouled in the lead-up. The game played out to the delight of the Hoboken men - Ross King and again Cathal Barrett notching over points from all angles.

A notable mention to the TippNY backline who withstood huge amounts of pressure throughout the game - Martin O’Neill and Henry Keyes had standout performances.

The game finished on a scoreline of TippNY 2.24 to Hoboken 2.29
Congratulations to both teams on a fantastic hurling exhibition.

Huge thanks to the players who gave up a lot of time this year and to the management team (including Mark Langton, Toby Kavanagh, Michael Maher, Joe Grace, David Loughnane) and the committee for their endless support of the team/players and club. Also a word for our sponsor's Structure Tech New York and McKeon's Bar & Restaurant. It wasn’t Tipperary’s day but like every year we’ll be back and bidding for the title in 2019
